This Weekend at Kean University
By njb on Wednesday, March 17 2010
On Saturday, March 20 at 8PM, NJB returns to Kean University with a Saturday evening filled with great characters from the ballet repertory including a trio of mechanical dancing dolls, a pirate and a princess, six gypsy dancers, a pair of Brazilian street dancers and more in a program that shows the dancers’ versatility with classic, romantic and contemporary ballet.
The dancing dolls are in a comic pas de trios from an old ballet about a magical toy shop. In it, two clown dolls vie for the affections of The Fairy Doll, the most beautiful doll in the toy shop.
The Pirate is Le Corsaire, whose pas de deux with his captive princess demands skill, stamina and flawless technique, and is always an audience pleaser.
The gypsies are characters in Esmeralda, a dramatic ballet based on Victor Hugo’s Hunchback of Notre Dame. When New Jersey Ballet mounted the full length Esmeralda in 2004, it has not been performed in the United States in at least 50 years. Saturday night’s excerpt is the gypsy pas de six, a wedding entertainment with a dramatic undertone. Esmeralda and her friends are hired to entertain at a wedding where the groom turns out to be Captain Phoebus, Esmeralda’s faithless lover.
Up from Rio come the Brazilians, Ana Luiza Luizi and Junio Teixeira, with an adaptation of an exciting, high-voltage street dance co-choreographed by Mr. Teixeira himself.
Also on the program, Poco Adagio, choreographed by the late George Tomal for a New Jersey Ballet Gala in 1986. It was part of the Governor’s Awards Program that year and was televised on NJN.
New Jersey Ballet at Wilkins Theatre, Kean University, 1000 Morris Avenue, Union. Saturday, March 20 at 8:00PM. Tickets are $30; alumni/faculty/staff and seniors, $25; students (must show ID) and children, $20. Box Office: 908-737-7469 or online www.keanstage.com.
