NJB celebrates 50 years

This year, New Jersey Ballet becomes the first New Jersey dance company to reach the half century mark and only the second professional performing arts organization in the state to do so.

We have planned an exciting season featuring NJB's return to Paper Mill after an absence of more than 25 years (except for Nutcracker). Themed performances will showcase Ballet with a Latin Beat and Ballet on Broadway. And the big Anniversary Gala at NJPAC will be a retrospective called Dancing through the Decades. And much much more.

The curtain goes up on November 1 & 2 with our annual visit to Centenary College. Then we'll make our debut in the beautifully restored Union County Performing Arts Center in Rahway November 9 with the children's classic Hansel & Gretel. Ballet with a Latin Beat opens the season at The Community Theatre at Mayo Center for the Performing Arts on November 15. The evening will feature two premieres by talented new choreographers from Latin America.

The program will be performed again in April at Union County PAC.

Our annual statewide Nutcracker tour will visit bergenPAC and Middle Township PAC and then settle in to Paper Mill Playhouse for 14 performances with the Paper Mill Orchestra. We'll celebrate the 38th season of this beloved holiday classic at Paper Mill.

January will bring the premiere of Ballet on Broadway to The Community Theatre, with dances inspired by the grand tradition of America's musical theatre. This program will be performed again at bergenPAC in May.

In February, we'll return to Paper Mill with a revival of the full length Sleeping Beauty, a splendid production not seen in New Jersey since 1998. There will be two performances, with orchestra.

Our big 50th Anniversary Gala is scheduled for Saturday night, April 18, at NJPAC. The evening will feature a retrospective of New Jersey Ballet Repertory Favorites and appearances by special celebrity guests.

We'll end the season on a classical note, with a full length production of Giselle at The Community Theatre. First performed in 1844, this tale of romance, betrayal, and the triumph of love over death has rightfully been called "the classic of all ballet classics."

Throughout the season and around the state, we'll give a total of eight Matinees for Kids & FamiliesSM featuring beautifully produced fairy tale ballets accompanied by original "storyteller" narration so even the littlest theatergoers can keep up with the story. This year's lineup consists of Hansel & Gretel, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. There's no better way to introduce children to the magic of dance theatre than Matinees for Kids & FamiliesSM. They're wonderful entertainment for the whole family.
