The quintessential classical ballet, Sleeping Beauty delivers high drama, tender romance, glorious Tchaikovsky music, which have made it an enduring favorite with adults and children for more than a hundred years. Based on the original 1890 Russian production, New Jersey Ballet’s production was staged by former ABT principal Eleanor D’Antuono. This is the full length Sleeping Beauty, complete with the prologue where the wicked fairy, Carabosse flies into a rage at not being invited to the christening and sets the tale of magic and romance in motion.
In keeping with its source, an old French fairy tale, the ballet is filled with familiar characters such as Princess Aurora, the Handsome Prince, the King and Queen and their splendid Royal Court, as well as characters from the fairy realm including the Lilac Fairy, the wicked Carabosse, Puss in Boots, Red Riding Hood, the Blue Bird and the Enchanted Princess. New Jersey Ballet’s troupe of international artists brings the story to life with elaborate pantomime and glorious dancing in a magical fairytale castle, with phantasmagorical costumes straight out of an old storybook illustration.

Sleeping Beauty includes many of the greatest moments in ballet, including the Rose Adagio, a challenge to the world’s most accomplished ballerinas, and the Garland Dance, an intricate circle-within-a-circle of graceful clockwork precision. When the production visited Bermuda in 1992, the Royal Gazette raved “New Jersey Ballet put a refreshing and exhilarating spin on this work, which is widely held to be the epitome of classical dance.” It’s a splendid introduction to dance theatre for young people and enjoyable entertainment for the whole family.
