New Jersey Ballet finishes Morristown season with a flourish May 19 Gala Evening to feature Heroines of Ballet with excerpts from Swan Lake, Romeo & Juliet, Don Q and Boris Eifman’s celebrated Red Giselle
New Jersey Ballet will end its Saturday Night series at The Community Theatre, Morristown on May 19 with a program that draws upon the company’s extensive repertory to put some of the great heroines of ballet all on stage in a single Gala Evening. Excerpts from classical and contemporary ballets have been selected to highlight the talents of the company’s multi-national roster of gifted female dancers.
Never before gathered on one stage, the evening will bring together excerpts from Giselle, Romeo & Juliet, Swan Lake, Don Q. Most exciting, the evening will include the New Jersey premiere of an excerpt from Russian choreographer Boris Eifman’s Red Giselle, which opened his company’s U.S. tour less than a month ago.
Red Giselle is loosely based on the life of Olga Spessivtseva, the great Russian ballerina whose life seemed to parallel that of Giselle, her most famous role. Already an international star at the Maryinsky in St. Petersburg, Spessivtseva fled Russia in 1918 to dance in the west until illness drove her from the stage. Though absent from the public eye for many years, Spessivtseva’s legend lived on, inspiring several tributes by major choreographers including Eifman’s Red Giselle and Gerard Arpino’s L’Air D’Esprit. Olga Spessivtseva died in 1991 at age 96.
The company’s final Saturday Night appearance at The Community Theatre this season, the evening promises to be a pull out all the stops, go for broke performance. The 2007-2008 Saturday Night Series has been sponsored in part by the F. M. Kirby Foundation.
The May 19 program begins at 8:00 p.m. Tickets range from $20 to $40. For more information and reservations, call the Box Office at 973-539-8008 or log on to www.communitytheatrenj.org.

The ballet features the music of Englebert Humperdinck, including the famous Fourteen Angels prayer.
Like all New Jersey Ballet’s matinees for Kids and FamiliesSM, Hansel & Gretel will be accompanied by original “storyteller” narration so even the littlest theatergoers can keep up with ease.
