New Jersey Ballet Company Names
Acting Artistic Director
World renowned dancer Maria Kowroski has been named Acting Artistic Director of New Jersey Ballet Company. After a remarkable career spanning over 25 years at New York City Ballet, Ms. Kowroski will begin her directorship in November.
“ I couldn't be more thrilled than to be moving forward into the next chapter of my career as part of the New Jersey Ballet family. The more I learn about the company, the more inspired I become, from the loving dedication of New Jersey Ballet's founder, Carolyn Clark, through every member of its excellent artistic and administrative staff. I consider myself extremely privileged to have the opportunity to share what I've learned with the company's beautiful dancers, and I feel very sure that, as a family, we will emerge from this unprecedented time and move into an exciting and much-needed renaissance for the performing arts”, says Kowroski.
Ms. Kowroski joined New York City Ballet in 1994 at the age of 17 and was the last dancer in the company to have worked with Jerome Robbins. Her repertory during her illustrious career included Apollo, Swan Lake, Firebird, Concerto Barocco, Jewels, Serenade, Symphony in C, The Nutcracker, and After the Rain to name a few. Ms. Kowroski was also the recipient of the prestigious Princess Grace award.
“We congratulate Maria on her long and successful career at New York City Ballet and look forward to having her join our Company. We are excited about the possibilities that will be created by her formidable knowledge and skill”, says Board Chair Scott Tross
New Jersey Ballet’s Founding Director Carolyn Clark has been the driving force behind the Company’s success and growth since its inception in 1958. “We are delighted to have Maria join New Jersey Ballet. She adds excitement and brings a new dimension to the Company. We welcome her and wish her the best”, says Carolyn Clark.
For over sixty-years, New Jersey Ballet has presented first-class programming to communities throughout New Jersey. Carolyn Clark not only created the state’s premier ballet company, she also expanded the Company’s visibility during her tenure with performances in South Carolina, Ohio and New York, while also putting New Jersey on the map in Taiwan, Bermuda, Italy, Mumbai and Russia.
“Carolyn Clark made a unique and extraordinary school and professional company. New Jersey Ballet has been a remarkable and artful contribution to the State of New Jersey. Ms. Clark leaves a lasting legacy that continues today and will be passed on to another female – Maria Kowroski. She will bring to New Jersey Ballet a fresh outlook on the ongoing history of classical dance. Her background of New York City Ballet’s repertoire along with her positive approach to coaching and teaching will be a great addition to the groundwork that Carolyn Clark provided”, says New Jersey Ballet’s Artistic Advisor Edward Villella.
Ms. Kowroski will be celebrating her final performance with New York City Ballet on October 17, 2021 at the Lincoln Center.
"Kowroski and her family — she and Harvey have a son, who at this point in his 5-year-old existence clearly needs a yard — will be relocating to New Jersey. But her ballet days are not behind her. On Nov. 8, Kowroski will start her next job, as acting artistic director of New Jersey Ballet."
